New York City’s public transport is operated primarily by the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority).

Subway

The subway runs 24/7 with 472 stations across 25 routes — the most stations of any metro system in the world. Trains run frequently, especially in Manhattan.

Bus

Over 300 local and express bus routes throughout the five boroughs. Select Bus Service (SBS) offers faster service with off-board fare payment.

Fares (2026)

  • Subway/Local Bus/Staten Island Railway: $3.00 (base fare)
  • Reduced fare (seniors/disability): $1.50
  • Express Bus: $7.25
  • Single ride ticket (paper): $3.50

OMNY (One Metro New York)

OMNY is the contactless fare payment system. Tap a contactless card, smartphone, or smartwatch at the turnstile. The OMNY 7-day fare cap is $35 — ride free the rest of the week after reaching the cap. Reduced fare cap: $17.50.

MetroCard was retired on January 1, 2026. No longer sold or refilled. Remaining value can be transferred to OMNY.

Commuter Rail

  • LIRR: Long Island Rail Road to Long Island
  • Metro-North: to Westchester and Connecticut
  • NJ Transit: to New Jersey (from Penn Station)

Airport Transfers

  • JFK: Airtrain ($8.50) connects to subway/LIRR at Jamaica or Howard Beach
  • LaGuardia: Q70 bus to Jackson Heights subway, or NYC Ferry
  • Newark (EWR): Airtrain free within airport, NJ Transit/Amtrak to NY Penn Station (~$15–16)

Taxis and Ride-sharing

  • Yellow cabs: serve Manhattan and airports. Flag-fall ~$3.50, $0.70 per 1/5 mile
  • Green cabs: serve outer boroughs and Upper Manhattan
  • Uber/Lyft: available citywide with dynamic pricing
  • Credit cards accepted in all taxis by law
